Covestro to resume normal operations in Germany

The chemicals giant said on Friday it was preparing to gradually resume "normal operations" at its German plants, in line with federal and state moves to ease coronavirus lockdown restrictions

Citing the latest findings from the Robert Koch Institute of Health Research (RKI) in Germany on Friday, Covestro said the number of new diagnoses in Germany had fallen as measures to contain the virus showed an "initial effect"

As of Friday, the RKI reported just over 150,000 infections in Germany, with 5,321 deaths

Bavaria was the worst hit, with nearly 40,000 cases and 1,525 deaths

Covestro chief executive Markus Steilemann said ensuring the safety and health of employees was a top priority as the company was taking "small steps" to resume normal operations

Starting April 27, Covestro will make "the first adjustments in every area" of its business, the CEO said

He said the company decided to develop a "comprehensive catalog of hygiene and personal behaviour measures" to ensure health and safety, including requiring masks

At the same time, it encourages continued work from home as much as possible
