Covestro recently opened a new polycarbonate lamination line at its Greater Noida plant in India
.
Covestro said the plant has undergone several de-bottlenecking efforts in the past, and as of 2017, it was able to support about 50% of local demand, while the rest of the capacity was supported by the Map Ta Phut plant in Thailand
.
To build a resilient business, the company launched a capacity expansion project in 2017
.
This is the first large-scale project in India since Covestro was spun off from Bayer in 2015
.
With the installation of two new production lines, the capacity of the Indian plant for polycarbonate compounds has more than doubled
.
Covestro said the project team faced some special challenges, such as the construction ban caused by dust pollution in the Delhi area, and the lockdown of the company due to Covid-19
.
Global and local travel restrictions during the pandemic have further impacted project activities, with the installation and commissioning of many overseas equipment only supported by virtual suppliers
.
Although the schedule had to be adjusted, thanks to teamwork, despite these major challenges, the project was achieved within the original budget
.
Dr.
Nicolas Stoeckel, Head of Engineering Plastics at Covestro, said: “From Germany to China to India, we have been investing in capacity to further improve our competitiveness and customer-centricity
.
A recent plant in Greater Noida, India, The expansion, an important part of the company's global presence, will further enhance our ability to better serve our customers in the region
.
Congratulations and thanks to the team for this great achievement despite all the challenges
.
"
Anand Srinivasan, General Manager, Covestro (India) said: "The investment in production technology reflects the growth of our company and further demonstrates our commitment to serving our customers sustainably
.
We continue to work proactively with our customers to forecast their demand, research market trends and provide services locally
.
