Continental Structural Plastics has won a 2016 JEC Innovation Award for its trunk lid concept from Lincoln MKS – a TCA Ultra Lite® outer panel and a prototype inner panel for carbon fiber RTM
.
In 2013, when Continental Structural Plastics established the Centre of Excellence for Lightweight Technology and Carbon Fiber Processes in Pouancé, France, the goal of "developing an economically viable process for the use of carbon fiber in high-volume applications" was set, and since then, Continental Structural Plastics Europe The team has been working on developing a high-performance carbon fiber RTM process to produce high-strength, ultra-lightweight components that help OEMs meet the challenges of stringent CO2 emissions regulations
.
Marc Philippe Toitgans, R&D Director at Continental Structural Plastics Europe, said: “We are committed to using 100% recycled carbon fibre to achieve a cycle time of 3 minutes
.
From CAE analysis, flow simulation, preforming process, mold design to full automation, Continental Structural Plastics has developed best-in-class expertise to support primary structural and Class A surface carbon fiber RTM projects for doors and other body-in-white applications
.
1.
The injection pressure is 100bars, and the pressure for door panel application is up to 1500t;
2.
The fiber content of structural application is high (>50%), and the injection time is 20s;
3.
Effective management of variable thickness;
4.
Compared with aluminum, the weight is reduced by up to 30%
.
To support several carbon fiber RTM projects to start in late 2020, Continental Structural Plastics, together with its parent company Teijin, is investing in a dedicated carbon fiber RTM production line in Palmela, Portugal.
An initial investment of EUR 5.
5 million will be used to install presses, RTM pouring equipment and a bonding unit
.
Ricardo Barros, Inapal Project Manager at Continental Structural Plastics, said: “We are delighted to be working hand in hand with our European customers to demonstrate our RTM capabilities
.
In addition to working on reducing component weight and reducing cycle time, the Continental Structural Plastics European team has also been working on a range of ways to make the production process more sustainable
.
Philippe Bonte, President of Continental Structural Plastics Europe, said: "Our aim is to continue our commitment to a sustainable value proposition focused on net-zero CO2 emissions and will achieve this through advanced manufacturing techniques and the use of renewable materials.
, to become an active contributor to global environmental protection
