The UAE Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has announced the successful completion of the construction of Unit 3 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, the first multi-unit operating nuclear power plant
in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi in the Arab world.
The announcement, which was made during Energy Day at the UN Conference of the Parties (COP26) on climate change, demonstrates the UAE's transition to clean energy, rapid decarbonization of the power sector, reducing carbon emissions and increasing electricity supply to meet growing electricity demand
.
The unit has now been handed over to operational readiness activities and is expected to be up and provide clean power in 2023, joining Unit 1 in full operation and Unit 2 connected to the UAE grid and tested while increasing power levels
.
With the completion of Unit 3, ENEC demonstrates significant progress in delivering climate solutions today and fulfills the UAE's commitment to using nuclear technology to provide clean energy to support the baseload clean electricity
needed to support intermittent renewable energy.
The Barakah nuclear power plant is leading a massive decarbonization of the UAE's power sector, with Unit 1 becoming the largest single generator in the region in April 2021 and producing clean electricity
around the clock.
In September 2021, Unit 2's connection to the UAE grid put Barakah at the forefront of the country's efforts to reduce emissions and is expected to double clean energy production
.
The Barakah nuclear power plant is expected to reduce carbon emissions in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi by 50% by 2025 with the commissioning of Unit 3, demonstrating the remarkable ability
of nuclear energy to produce baseload electricity without producing carbon emissions.
