Pakistan is adding a lot of additional internet bandwidth and now adding new submarine cable systems
almost every other quarter.
Pakistan is now able to process several terabytes of data per second, compared to just a few hundred gigabytes of
bandwidth a few years ago.
The latest submarine cable system, which has only two landing sites in Pakistan, Gwadar and Karachi, and will straddle Africa and Europe, is the PEACE submarine cable system
built by China's Huawei.
The submarine cable is funded by Tropic Science and managed globally by Hong Kong-based telecommunications giant PCCW
.
The PEACE submarine cable system with a total capacity of 60Tbps will be based on 200G DWDM technology
.
While we have no official confirmation, sources indicate that Cybernet and Jazz will be local landings and global internet partners
for the Pakistani consortium.
It is worth noting that the existing cable systems in Pakistan are still low in capacity compared to PEACE cables, such as AAE-1 (with local partner PTCL) with a design capacity of 40Tbps and SMW-5 (with local partner Transworld) with a design capacity of 24Tbps
.
According to reports, the PEACE submarine cable system will be launched in Pakistan (Karachi and Gwadar), connecting Djibouti and a number of other African, Middle Eastern and European countries, and connecting France
during the first phase.
In the next phase, it will connect to other East Asian countries
.
It is clear that the PEACE submarine cable system is China's quest to provide better connectivity between potentially rich and untapped African markets, and Pakistan will be the main beneficiary in the process
.
When it is put into operation in 2019, the PEACE submarine cable will be the most promising cable system in Pakistan and will provide more redundancy to Pakistan's Internet landscape, helping to avoid the frequent Internet outages
that the country has experienced in the past.
Pakistan said the increase in 60Tbs capacity is one of
the features that PEACE will bring.
Another more important advantage is the redundancy of international bandwidth connectivity, as Pakistan still faces network outages when multiple submarine cable systems go offline at the same time
.
Pakistan, for example, caused major internet connectivity problems
when multiple submarine cables failed simultaneously just last year.
More importantly, the new submarine cable will be equipped with more redundant fiber networks throughout Pakistan, providing more reliable Internet and further strengthening cybersecurity
