Comcast, the largest cable systems company in the United States, will invest nearly $100 million over the next three years to expand its fiber and coaxial cable infrastructure in Chicago and surrounding areas
.
Comcast said the plan includes major network upgrades
in downtown Chicago areas such as the Central, Eastern, North and West Loops, as well as the North River and Creek West sections.
The new expansion will begin
with Comcast's 11,000-mile fiber network infrastructure deployed in the greater Chicago area over the past 20 years.
Comcast said its network already covers 90 percent of business users in downtown Chicago, with greater penetration at home
.
In addition, Comcast is also launching a 2Gbps Gigabit Pro service
in Chicago.
The service is designed to improve Comcast's ability
to serve corporate and residential users.
It also helps the company cope with increasing competitive pressure
from AT&T and Google Fiber.
