A PPA for a 70MW solar project by clean energy developer Community Energy has been approved to provide electricity
to government facilities in Philadelphia.
Located in Adams County, Pennsylvania, the project will generate enough electricity to operate 22 percent of Philadelphia's government buildings
by 2020.
Once completed, the installation will be the largest PV site in Pennsylvania and a major step toward Philadelphia's clean energy goal, which aims to get 100 percent of its electricity
from renewable sources by 2030.
The project will sell 100 percent of its electricity to the Philadelphia Energy Authority
, an independent city agency, under a 20-year contract.
The project will generate 156,000 MWh of energy in its first year of operation, eliminating more than 4 million tons of CO2 emissions
over the life of the project.
Community Energy's CEO and co-founder said, "Philadelphia's solar promise has shown impressive and much-needed leadership
on climate change in Pennsylvania.
As the costs of climate change rise, Philadelphia is ensuring reliable long-term solar decarbonization for municipalities and stopping irreversible climate damage
.
”
Through this project, the Economic Opportunity Program will be used to include minority-, women- and disability-owned businesses in Adams solar PV installations
.
"This project not only helps Philadelphia to take a leadership role in climate action, but it also makes good economic sense and helps promote regional job growth
in the renewable energy sector," said Mayor Philadelphia.
We thank Councilwoman Reynolds Brown, the Philadelphia Energy Authority and Community Energy Corporation for creating this win-win partnership
for the people of Filadles.
