On Monday, Sandfire Resources plans to start commercial mining of copper and silver in the Kalahari copper belt in Botswana, which is trying to reduce its reliance
on diamond mining.
The Kalahari Copper Belt, which stretches for nearly 1,000 kilometers northeast of Botswana to western Namibia, is known as one of
the richest copper and silver deposits in the world.
Analysts say this could help diversify beyond its main diamond mining, which accounts for 70 percent of Botswana's export earnings, especially as the pandemic has reduced demand
for diamonds.
"Our goal is to start production in 2022 and start expanding to 5.
3 million tonnes per annum after that," Chief Executive Karl Simich said in a telephone interview with Reuters
.
Simich said the ASX-listed Perth-based company would begin the first phase of 3.
2 million tonnes of production per annum next year, after the company's board approved a $259 million development investment
