Colombian President Ivan Duque announced Tuesday that Colombia will provide more than 5,000 megawatts of installed capacity
in a new round of renewable energy auctions scheduled for the first quarter of 2021.
The president stressed that the auction will be open to electricity retailers serving large industrial consumers and that the projects must go live
by December 2022.
The terms of the auction will be defined by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, and although large industries account for 29% of the country's energy demand, it will not be ruled out that electricity companies that power homes and small businesses may participate
.
Colombia held its first successful renewable energy auction a year ago, with six wind and three solar farm projects entering into 15-year power purchase agreements (PPAs)
with bidding retailers.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Energy Department said it expects the new auction to allow the country to make greater use of its solar potential, especially with more than 5,800 megawatts of solar projects registered by UPME, Colombia's national mining and energy planning sector
.
According to UPME's latest overview of all power projects, the actual generation of all solar projects registered with UPME was higher as of October 31, involving 196 projects totaling 6,657 megawatts
.
This compares to about 3,822 MW for hydropower, 1,658 MW for thermal power, 3,005 MW for wind power and 25 MW
for biomass.
In his speech, the president also added that the Colombian government will work with Chile this year and in the first quarter of 2021 to develop a green hydrogen roadmap
