The Clariant Masterbatches business unit has developed a new chrome pigment that opens up new opportunities for designers and manufacturers of high-end products, bottles and packaging

Especially for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers, this chrome pigment is slightly transparent, making it ideal for applications where the contents of the bottle need to be visible

The team from Clariant's ColorWorks™ Design and Technology Center developed this new masterbatch in response to the growing market focus on true metallic appearance, especially in the technical field

The secret to getting the bright chrome effect is the particle size distribution of the pigment and the way it is incorporated into the masterbatch

Unlike other pigments, which turn gray or black with laser light and leave a tangible, tactile mark on the surface, chrome pigments disappear, leaving only the natural transparent polymer itself

"You can create very small and delicate marks," says Stephanie Dycha, manager of the ColorWorks Center in West Chicago, Illinois, USA

"Even in very thin locations, such as areas typical of injection stretch blow molded PET, a three-dimensional appearance can be achieved
