Chinese military observers around the world say there are clear signs that China is building its first domestically built aircraft carrier, the Type 001A aircraft carrier
.
China's domestically built aircraft carrier may be unveiled next year and far surpasses the Liaoning ship
According to a US website reported on October 26, a hull in a shipyard in Dalian has long been speculated
about because of its "no photography" sign around its dry dock.
In the Oct.
24 photo, the Dalian shipyard installed a 7.
5-meter-high, 27-meter-wide module on top of the hull, which is almost certainly part of
an aircraft hangar.
These new photos provide further evidence that there is no doubt that China's aircraft carrier program is advancing
.
According to the report, the Type 001A aircraft carrier has a displacement of between 65,000 and 70,000 tons, has a ski-jump deck for fighter takeoff, and can carry J-15 "Flying Shark" fighters and Z-8/Z-18F helicopters
.
Its volume is similar
to that of the Liaoning and the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier currently under construction in the United Kingdom.
The carrier will employ automated control systems to reduce staffing, while increasing fuel and weapons reserves and adopting smaller island islands, giving it much higher performance
than the Liaoning.
If all goes well, the carrier will be unveiled
in the second half of 2016.
Its name is most likely taken from the name
of a province or municipality directly under the Central Government in China.
The carrier could enter service in 2019, doubling China's ability to respond to threats, extending from the first island chain to Africa and Latin America
.
As the Chinese Navy gains more naval aviation experience from the Liaoning and Type 001A, the Chinese Navy will look at more advanced future carriers, such as the planned Type 002 with catapults and the nuclear-powered Type 003 carrier
