China Telecom has announced its participation in the construction of a new submarine cable
that directly connects the Philippines with Hong Kong and the United States.
It is reported that the Chinese telecommunications company signed a letter of intent with the Philippine Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to launch its submarine cable using the government's cable
landing facility.
According to reports, this is the third submarine cable project proposed by the Philippines, aiming to improve the quality of Internet services and reduce costs
.
The Philippines said its geographical advantage makes it best suited to become a global hub
for Asia and Oceania.
China Telecom is studying the use
of a cable landing station built by the Philippine government in Luzon.
This is the same landing station as the other cables, including one built by a consortium including social media giant Facebook, which also landed
here.
It is reported that the consortium of enterprises involved in the construction of this submarine cable includes China Telecom, Chelsea Holdings and Udenna Group, and the submarine cable is expected to be put into operation
in late 2019 or early 2020.
