Recently, DTEK, Ukraine's largest private power producer, and China Machinery and Equipment Engineering Corporation (CMEC) said that the two sides have agreed to a joint project
to build one of Europe's largest solar power plants at a cost of 230 million euros.
China Machinery Engineering will build Europe's third largest solar power plant
The solar power plant will be built in the Dnipropetrovsk region of central Ukraine with a planned capacity of 200 MW
.
The power station ranks third
in Europe in terms of potential production.
"The project will be completed in a very short period of time and is expected to be completed
by the end of this year.
" DTEK CEO Maksim Timchenko said
at a signing ceremony in Kiev with CMEC Chairman Zhang Chun.
The project will be funded
by a combination of DTEK funding and CMEC loans.
The amount of the loan is not currently disclosed
.
DTEK is a new entrant in the solar energy sector, launching its first solar project, the Tryfonivska solar power plant
with a capacity of 10 MW, last August.
Ukraine's energy sector remains heavily dependent on traditional fossil fuels and nuclear energy
.
Last year, renewables accounted for only about
1% of total electricity generation.
Timchenko said DTEK plans to increase its renewable capacity to 1,000 MW
in 2019.
According to a UN-backed report, new global renewable energy capacity set a new record of 157 GW last year, more than
double the new capacity added by fossil fuels.
