Another official directly involved in the project said that implementing the project could cost about $2 billion
under the original plan.
Bangladesh plans to provide electricity to all its more than 160 million citizens by 2021, the year
it intends to enter the ranks of middle-income countries.
Currently, 20% of Bangladesh's population has no access to electricity, and the country faces a daily power shortage of 1,000 to 1,500 megawatts, rising to 2,000 megawatts
during peak summer hours.
Bangladesh currently produces up to 9,500 megawatts of electricity per day with a generating capacity of 12,000 megawatts, but the power generation capacity cannot be fully utilized
due to major fuel shortages.
