On August 26, Zhu Xijun, general manager of China Railway Construction Southeast Asia Company, said in Bangkok that China has finalized the order for Thailand's high-speed rail, and the two sides plan to sign an intergovernmental framework agreement on China-Thailand railway cooperation in early September, and the groundbreaking ceremony
is expected to be held at the end of October.
Zhu Xijun said that China and Thailand plan to complete the railway construction within three years, and the China-Thailand railway cooperation will bring benefits
to Thailand's economic and social development.
After the completion and operation of the China-Thailand railway, it will greatly facilitate people's travel, and the round-trip rail fare from Kunming to Bangkok is about 3,600 baht (about 700 yuan) per person, equivalent to half or one-third of the plane fare, and the freight cost is equivalent to one-ninth
of the air cost.
It may add 2 million Chinese tourists to Thailand every year, further facilitate the export of Thai agricultural products, and make Thailand a transportation hub
for ASEAN.
Wu Zhiwu, Chargé d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, said that China-Thailand railway cooperation is an example
of the effective docking of China's "Belt and Road" initiative and Thailand's Prayuth infrastructure construction plan.
On this basis, China and Thailand can continue to strengthen cooperation
in major infrastructure projects such as ports and airports.
The China-Thailand Railway is related to the connectivity strategy between China and Southeast Asia, connecting Vientiane, Laos to the north and Kunming, and south to Malaysia and Singapore, which may form an important part
of the Trans-Asian Railway planning.
The China-Thailand railway cooperation includes four routes: Bangkok-Kangui, Kangui-Matab, Kangui-Koratchasima and Koratchas-Nong Khai, forming a "human" shape that crosses the north-south territory
north of Bangkok, Thailand.
In October 2013, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang again promoted the high-speed rail cooperation project between the two countries during his visit to Thailand, after which the two countries jointly issued the "Long-term Plan for the Development of China-Thailand Relations", but this plan was twisted by changes in the situation in Thailand
