Enel Generacion Chile, a subsidiary of Italy's national electricity company Enel, shut down a 158-megawatt coal-fired unit at the Tarapaca power plant in Tarapaca on Dec.
    31
, following a schedule approved by the Chilean Energy Commission (CNE).

The now-closed plant accounts for 25 percent of Enel's total coal-fired power generation capacity in Chile, while pledging to increase investment
in new renewable energy projects, the company said in a press release this week.

The shutdown of the unit was originally planned in May 2020 as part of
a nationwide coal phase-out plan agreed with the Chilean government in early June last year.
A few days later, Enel decided to request CNE to stop operations of the plant by the end of 2019 to advance the transition
    to renewable energy.

A month later, the CNE authorized an early shutdown, bringing Chile's third coal-fired generating unit in Talapaca off the line
    in 2019.

Following the closure of the Tarapaca power plant, employees have the opportunity to move to other areas
of Enel Generacion and Enel Group's companies in Chile.
