According to data, data released by the Chilean government showed that the country produced 449,539 tons of copper in February, up 0.
2% from 448,527 tons in the same period last year, partly due to one more day
in February.
However, February production was down 13.
8%
from 453,638 tonnes in January.
Chile is the world's
largest producer of copper.
Slowing demand from China, the top buyer, pushed copper prices down, causing miners around the world to delay or reduce production, including Chile
, which produces one-third of the world's copper.
The statistics agency INE said an extra working day in February helped copper production increase year-on-year, partially offsetting a reduction
in production caused by "a decline in ore grade faced by a major mine.
" The country's January-February copper production was 909,681 tonnes, down 6.
7%
from a year earlier.
