Codelco, Chile's national mining company, the world's largest copper producer, said on Thursday it would seek certification
for the Copper Mark Sustainability Initiative for all its operations by the end of 2023.
As buyers focus on the environmental impact of their products, copper miners increasingly want to prove their sustainability
.
Codelco said the copper mark was developed in accordance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to demonstrate that copper production is responsible
.
"Since 2020.
.
.
We have 100% traceability of our production to a standard comparable to that required by the International Assurance System Copper Mark, so we want the process of obtaining certification to proceed
smoothly.
”
Codelco said its flagship El Teniente mine will be the first division
to participate in the program.
To be certified, each mine must meet 32 sustainability criteria
related to issues such as greenhouse gas emissions, health and safety, tailings management, biodiversity, business integrity, gender equality and human rights.
It is then evaluated
every three years.
In Chile, the Centinela and Zaldivar mines in Antofagasta and the BHP Escondida and Spence deposits have signed on to the initiative
