Chilean state-owned company Codelco, the world's largest copper producer, said Thursday it would begin construction of a long-delayed $1 billion desalination plant this year to supply its largest operation
in northern Chile.
In December 2019, the company canceled the contract awarded to the consortium due to technical adjustments to the project, so the construction was delayed
.
"A consortium consisting of Marubeni Corporation and Transelec will be responsible for the engineering to develop the plant and its propulsion system, which will be operational
in three years," the company said in a statement.
”
Codelco has advanced its desalination program to reduce freshwater consumption amid a severe drought that has lasted more than a decade and to help the government set ambitious environmental targets
.
The company plans to reduce freshwater consumption by 60 percent
by reusing water from tailings, obtaining seawater from desalination plants, and improving the efficiency of its operational processes.
The desalination plant has an initial capacity of 840 litres per second and is likely to be further expanded
.
The consortium will build and operate the plant and then transfer it to Codelco
