Codelco, the world's largest copper producer in Chile, said it will reduce carbon emissions by 70%, reduce inland water consumption by 60%, and recycle industrial waste by 65%
by 2030.
The state-owned mining company, which aims to offer green copper products to its customers in more sustainable ways, such as renewable energy, is now taking a broader approach
.
The plan revolves around five key points and aims to reduce three-quarters of the company's carbon emissions by creating what it calls "100 percent clean energy," which includes replacing all underground production equipment, such as electric vehicles and machinery, and finding new clean energy, such as green hydrogen
.
In terms of reducing industrial waste, the miner said it will first recycle all tyres and increase recycling of non-hazardous solid industrial residues such as steel, wood, packaging materials, organic waste and scrap metal
.
Codelco's plan also covers the physical and chemical stability of
its tailings deposits.
CEO Octavio Araneda said in the statement: "As a company, we are responsible for achieving our goals to strengthen sustainable development
in Chile and the world with clear goals and deadlines.
”
If successful, analysts say, the move by the world-influential copper giant could pave the way
for more important industry sustainability standards for the historically highly polluting copper mining trade.
Amid increasing global pressure from governments and environmental groups on mining companies, customers are also demanding products with lower carbon footprints as there is growing scientific evidence that emissions are a major driver of
climate change.
