Chile's energy commission, CNE, has published the final terms and conditions for the 2022 electricity auction, initiating the auction process
of 5,250 GWh of electricity per year to qualified domestic distribution companies.
Among them, auction bidders will compete for 15-year power purchase agreements and should supply contracted power
between January 1, 2027 and December 31, 2041.
The supply period can be extended to three years if not all contracted power has been dispatched
in full over a 15-year period.
The auction is technology-neutral, and coal-fired power plant conversion projects, renewable energy and energy storage programs, while not standalone storage, can participate
.
The novelty of the 2022 tender is that power producers are not allowed to use technologies such as coal, diesel, petroleum coke and No.
6 fuel oil to support their offers
.
There have been some minor changes
to the previously given schedule.
After a consultation period, corrections and amendments
to the terms can be made until May 2.
Bids can be submitted
by July 1.
If the auction ends with the first round, the contract award is scheduled for July 25
.
If the process progresses to the second round, the contract award will take place
on August 1, 2022.
Chile's 2021 auction was a huge success in the renewable energy sector, with five companies outperforming everyone
else by providing round-the-clock cheap electricity from new wind, solar and energy storage projects.
