-based Chevron Phillips Chemical Company (CP Chem) said on Wednesday that construction of its planned new 266,000-ton-per-year 1-hexene unit began on May 25
.
The new plant, built in Old Ocean, Texas, near CP Chem's Sweeny plant, is expected to start production in 2023
.
The company said that once the new plant starts up, it will increase CP Chem's total capacity to 650,000 tonnes/year
.
CP Chem currently operates two full-line alpha-olefin units and the world's largest 1-hexene unit at its Cedar Bayou facility in Baytown, Texas
.
Mitch Eichelberger, Executive Vice President, Polymers and Specialty Products, said: "The new unit will provide more space and throughput to meet the anticipated needs of our growing customer base, while providing a solid foundation for future growth
.

The company said the new unit will benefit from significant infrastructure advantages, feedstock supply and operational expertise

The project will also utilize the latest technologies to achieve energy and emissions efficiency improvements
