A year after launching POM Eco-B, a mass-balanced bio-based polyoxymethylene material, Celanese is developing a new sustainable polyoxymethylene product
.
Celanese is working with Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials (MCAM) to develop a mechanically recycled POM solution called POM Eco-R
.
Celanese and MCAM plan to jointly evaluate options for converting polyoxymethylene effluent from post-industrial and post-consumer sources into marketable final product formulations
.
Celanese's goal is to be able to provide its customers with sustainable options for scrap or end-of-life waste, and to guarantee the closure and reuse of materials
.
The aim is to create a range of recyclable POM materials that offer a smaller carbon footprint while maintaining the same product consistency, quality and performance
.
While the use of POM Eco-B also enables customers to reduce CO2 emissions in their end-use products, not all customers or industries are ready to adopt the biological mass balance approach this involves
.
POM Eco-B has passed the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification+ (ISCC+)
.
To that end, Celanese partnered with MCAM to develop a product with mechanically recycled content to better meet the needs of these customers
.
Tom Kelly, Senior Vice President of Engineered Materials at Celanese, said, "The collaboration with MCAM to provide bio-based POM components (which can be uniquely produced from waste through bio-methane or carbon dioxide emissions) and recycled POM elevates the potential of POM as an ideal engineering material.
Wide availability to help our customers meet and achieve their sustainability goals
.
"
MCAM is responsible for the collection, separation and processing of recycled raw materials, while Celanese provides formulation, product technology and production capabilities
.
MCAM has invested heavily in creating closed-loop opportunities for post-industrial and post-consumer POM waste streams
.
Markus Wehinger, Business Manager for Recycling Solutions at MCAM, said the partnership with Celanese will open up a wide range of new opportunities for our customers to achieve their own sustainability goals
.
Celanese hopes to offer its POM Eco-R solution to existing and new customers, offering up to 30 percent recycled content
.
