On Monday, Canadian mining company First Quantum Minerals Ltd said it plans to expand operations
at Kansanshi, Zambia's Kansashi copper mine.
The Kansashi Copper Mine is currently the largest copper mine
in Africa.
The company said in a technical report that it plans to expand the annual capacity of its sulphide ore concentrator plant at the Kansashi copper mine by 25 million tons, which would boost annual production to 52 million tons
per year.
First Quantum expects to spend nearly $650 million over approximately two years on the expansion
, starting in the second half of 2023.
The company added that the expansion plan will be further refined
before seeking project approval.
Reuters reported earlier this year that Canadian mining companies were weighing a roughly $1 billion investment to boost production at the Kansashi copper mine
, despite a dispute with Zambian state mining company ZCCM-IH over project funding.
