Battery storage projects are more competitive
than new transmission projects due to falling battery costs.
Bloomberg New Energy expects the market size of energy storage projects that provide transmission and distribution services to reach $277 billion
between 2020 and 2050.
The report argues that batteries can reduce grid congestion and reduce the need
for new transmission lines.
While grid costs are rising or staying the same, the cost of a four-hour lithium-ion battery system is expected to fall 68 percent to $
104 per kWh by 2050, up from $320 per kWh in 2020.
Grid operators are already proposing battery alternatives
.
For example, Germany plans to spend 348 million euros on the Netzbooster project and France plans to spend 80 million euros
on the RYO project.
From the current point of view, the use of batteries for grid service support is still in its infancy
.
It could take two decades for the market to grow to $10 billion a year
.
In order to accelerate growth, the energy storage industry also needs a regulatory structure to promote standardized and high-quality development
