Europe needs to make smart use of renewable gases to meet its climate goals, and save up to €140 billion
a year.
By 2050, European renewable gas production will increase to 120 billion cubic meters
That's according to a new report
organized by the Gas for Climate initiative.
The organization is made up of seven gas transportation companies, including Enagás, Fluxys and Gasunie, as well as two renewable gas associations, the European Biogas Association and Consorzio Italiano Biogas
.
By 2050, renewable gas production will increase to more than 120 billion cubic meters, including renewable hydrogen and biomethane
, the group said.
The report suggests that these gases can be used in existing gas infrastructure to heat buildings, produce baseload electricity for wind and solar, and fuel
heavy transportation.
"We want to facilitate the large-scale production of renewable hydrogen and biomethane, transported, stored and distributed through existing natural gas infrastructure, and thus in combination with renewable energy generation for our energy systems
," said the CEO of the organization's member companies.
”
This will help Europe achieve the goals of the Paris climate agreement at the lowest possible cost, while strengthening Europe's energy security
