The National Grid Power System Operator (ESO) reports that by 2025, the UK's grid will be able to "safely and reliably achieve zero carbon emissions"
as long as enough renewable energy is connected to the grid to meet demand.
National Grid ESO, an independent company within the National Grid Group, relies on a mix of energy from different sources to balance the system and ensure that electricity
is always available when people need it.
Over the past decade, the amount of renewable energy that is part of the overall energy mix of the grid has steadily increased
.
FSO director Fintan Slye said in 2018, ESO managed a number of power system records, including the UK's first wind power exceeding 15GW with no coal power supply
for 72 consecutive hours.
"By 2025, ESO will transform the operation of the UK electricity system and build innovative systems, products and services to ensure the network is ready to handle 100% zero carbon," Slye added
.
"By 2025, zero-carbon operation of the power system means a fundamental change in
the way our systems are designed to operate.
Integrating newer technologies throughout the system, from large-scale offshore wind to domestic-scale solar panels, and increasing demand-side involvement, real-time management and control systems using new smart digital systems," Slye said, "We believe that promoting competition ultimately brings better value
to consumers.
" The new products and services we will introduce will help reduce the overall cost of operating the system, which in turn will reduce costs for consumers

for the complete decarbonization of the entire power system," the report emphasizes.
