Egypt's first integrated telecommunications operator, ET, has announced that it will launch the hybrid African ring network plan HARP, a new submarine cable system that connects major countries on the continent, both coastal and inland, by 2023, and finally reaches Europe
.
Egypttelecom said that the goal of HARP is that the system will connect South Africa to Italy and France along the east coast, Portugal along the west coast, and then connect landing sites in South Africa, Europe and Egypt through a land fiber optic cable system, thus forming a complete ring network
across the continent.
The HARP system will also utilize its diverse and flexible feeder paths to connect to multiple potential landing sites
.
Egypttelecom said the HARP plans to cross Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and expand to include premium routes
on both sides of the Suez Canal.
Sharm Elsheikh, located at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, will serve as a new landing site and be connected to coastal cities in the Gulf of Suez, forming a hybrid connection solution for ground and submarine fiber between Egyptian landing sites

HARP will enable Egypt Telecom's plan to establish open sites at multiple new locations in Africa and Europe to serve

It will also support digital transformation efforts across African countries and expand the company's international reach
