Anglo American said on Wednesday that it will start using renewable energy to power Chile's mining operations in 2021 thanks to an agreement between global mining companies and the Chilean subsidiary of Italian energy giant Enel
.
Renewable energy provided by Enel's Chilean subsidiary will provide electricity
for Anglo American Resources' Los Bronces copper mine, as well as El Soldado and Chagres operations, the company said in a statement.
Global mining companies are increasingly looking for innovations to improve efficiency, reduce costs and reduce mine water and non-renewable energy use
.
Chile is the world's largest producer of copper, which largely means the country will turn to solar and wind power and desalinating seawater
.
Anglo American said the agreement, which came into effect in January 2021, will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than
70 percent.
The company installed a floating solar panel in March in the tailings pond at its Los Bronces mine outside the Chilean capital, Santiago, to improve the efficiency of
the deposit.
