Deborah Martorell, a meteorologist in Puerto Rico, tweeted on Tuesday: "Friend, I regret to inform you that the Arecibo Observatory has just collapsed
    .

The iconic observatory, operated by the National Science Foundation through the University of Central Florida, consists of a fixed 1,000-foot-wide dish antenna built into a bowl-shaped depression that reflects radio waves from space onto a 900-ton instrument platform
    supported by three towers.

It is reported that in August, the Arecibo Observatory was closed
because an auxiliary steel cable was broken and caused a 100-foot scratch on the reflector.

Unfortunately, the main steel cable supporting the equipment platform broke in early November, leading the National Science Foundation to announce a few weeks later that it intended to shut down the radio telescope
    due to too much damage.

For 57 years, the observatory has played an important role
in observing deep space targets, objects in the solar system, and the composition and behavior of using intense lasers to illuminate Earth's upper atmosphere.

Before the observatory collapsed, it withstood hurricanes and earthquakes and played a major role
in films such as GoldenEye and Chrono Contact.
