Moscow, Nov.
21 (Sputnik) -- Britain continues to buy Russian oil while saying in documents that it imports
it from other countries, according to the British Sunday Times.
According to the newspaper, at least 39 Russian oil tankers carrying more than 200 million pounds worth of Russian oil have arrived in British ports since the launch of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine, although the oil in question is "classified as imported from other countries"
.
The Sunday Times wrote that since March, "a total of £778 million worth of Russian oil has arrived at 10 ports in the UK"
.
At the same time, other countries
are indicated in the document.
The newspaper explained that under UK registration rules, the country of import on paper refers to the country of shipment, not the country
of production.
For example, goods of Chinese origin may be registered in the UK as goods from Germany if they are imported by a German company
.
More than £78 million worth of Russian oil arrived at UK ports in June, although the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the country did not import oil
from Russia in June, according to sources.
Oil imports in June are registered in the document as imports
from the Netherlands, Estonia, Poland or Belgium.
The newspaper noted that British imports of Russian oil were legal
until the ban came into effect on December 5.
