The Brazilian government has agreed to build four new hydropower plants and include them in the National Investment Partnership Program (PPI
    ).

According to reports, the four hydropower projects are Bem Querer hydropower station, 650 MW, Castanheira hydropower plant 140 MW, Telemaco Borba hydropower plant, 118 MW and Tabajara hydropower plant, 430 MW
    .
Currently, these hydropower plants have been approved for environmental permitting studies
    .

Bem Querer, located on the Amazon River in Roraima, is considered vital
    to Brazil's energy security.
    Roraima is the only state
that is not yet connected to the country's main power grid (SIN).
Bem Querer will have the transmission lines connecting the SIN, which the government sees as a necessary power station in the country to reduce the region's dependence
    on energy imports.

But located in Brazil's greenest region, the Amazon rainforest, Bem Querer is a potential target
    for environmental groups.
A 2007 House of Lords analysis of the project showed that it could have a negative impact
on areas occupied by indigenous peoples.

Also located in the Amazon is the Tabajara hydroelectric power plant in the state of Rodonia, a project that could affect cities, protected areas, lands and indigenous peoples, including communities living along rivers and fishermen
    .
The Federal Prosecutor's Office (MPF) estimates the plant will affect 28 indigenous communities
    with more than 72,000 people.

The other two projects are less controversial in terms of geography
    .
Located in Matog?? The Castanheira hydroelectric power station on the Atrinos River in Rosso State is not close to any indigenous land, and construction works will advance with environmental plans to protect and reduce the impact
on flora and fauna, flora, flora and fauna, flora, fish and water quality.
It will also provide social programmes to mitigate the impact on the population of the
    municipality.

The Telemaco Borba hydroelectric power plant, located on the Tibagi River in Paraná, is far from an environmentally sensitive area where small-scale mining is the only activity
    that could be negatively affected.
