Botswana plans to add 600 megawatts (MW) of solar and coal-fired power over the next six years as the country looks to wean itself off imports while also focusing on electricity exports
, Botswana's mines and energy minister said on Monday.
Botswana currently has 600 megawatts of electricity demand, but recurring failures at one of its main power plants have left the country dependent on imports and diesel generators to make up for the shortage
.
Mining Minister Lefoko Moagi said purchases of an additional 200 MW of solar energy would begin early next year, which is expected to be completed in 2026, while the 10 MW CBM extraction plant is expected to be operational
in 2025.
Under the 20-year resource plan approved in August, the government is also procuring 100 MW of solar PV capacity, scheduled to come online in 2022, and 300 MW of coal-fired power plants, which are expected to come online
by 2026.
The state-owned Botswana Power Company (BPC) is Botswana's sole electricity producer, but the country is seeking collaboration with the private sector at all stages of building coal, gas and solar projects to diversify
its electricity supply.
In June, three private companies in Botswana were granted power generation permits, most of which will be exported
.
Despite huge coal resources of 212 billion tonnes and some investors are also setting up mines for export or power generation, Botswana currently has only two
operating coal mines.
