Greentech company Bockatech, inventor of the innovative EcoCore manufacturing technology platform for sustainable packaging, has received investment from Borealis
.
The investment will give Borealis a minority stake
.
This investment deepens the existing partnership between the two companies
.
Their collaboration dates back to 2018 to develop foam injection moulding solutions for reusable and recyclable packaging
.
The investment is intended to advance joint market and material development over the long term, as well as scale up Bockatech's proprietary EcoCore manufacturing platform
.
EcoCore uses optimized polyolefin resins supplied by Borealis to manufacture mouldings of skin foam skins with a high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent thermal insulation properties
.
Since the production of safe and reliable molds using EcoCore technology requires minimal investment in new equipment, processors can easily switch to more sustainable packaging formats for a wide range of applications
.
EcoCore also complies with all three levels of Borealis' circular cascade model - design for eco-efficiency, design for reuse and recycling - contributing to plastic recycling and greater sustainability
.
As Lucrèce Foufopoulos, Executive Vice President of Borealis Polyolefins, Circular Economy Solutions and Innovation & Technology, points out: “This is a testament to our EverMinds approach and commitment to collaboration and innovation to make plastics circular
.
”
While the collaboration will continue to focus on reusable coffee cups, more licensing applications of the technology are expected, including more sustainable reusable packaging types and lightweight single-use solutions
.
As the EcoCore technology is further developed and scaled up, applications in a range of non-packaged products are also envisaged
.
Henri Gaskjenn, CEO of Bockatech, said: "Working with Borealis, we have been able to develop packaging for several leading foodservice and FMCG brands in North America and Europe
.
This new funding will help us further advance EcoCore technology and increase applications.

"
The collaboration will also help achieve the goal of enabling more global customers, value chain partners and supply chain players to benefit from a wider range of lightweight foam applications, primarily in the packaging industry, thereby driving the development of circular packaging solutions
