BHP Billiton and Southwire, a U.
S.
-based copper wire manufacturer
, has completed the first shipment of carbon-neutral copper products from a Chilean copper mine.
According to reports, this batch of copper materials is produced from BHP Billiton's copper mine in Chile and is processed and produced
by Southwire's factory in Georgia, USA.
In March 2021, the two parties reached a cooperation agreement to carry out carbon neutrality pilot cooperation on copper products, reflecting BHP Billiton's commitment to climate change action plan to support industrial development to improve traceability and carbon neutral production technologies
.
As BHP Billiton's first carbon neutral pilot project for copper production, the collaboration aims to track BHP Billiton's copper cathode and associated greenhouse gas emissions reductions through Southwire's blockchain-based copper rod production operations and BHP
Billiton's carbon offset capabilities.
Through this collaboration, BHP Billiton aims to increase supply chain transparency and show carbon neutrality across the copper value chain, underpinned by credible measurements of greenhouse gas emissions, reporting and tracking the potential
for wider downstream demand.
BHP Billiton said, "We are taking concrete actions to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the copper value chain
.
We are committed to helping lead this change and create social value
through sustainable copper production.
