    A life cycle assessment according to ISO 14040/44 by the Technical University of Berlin showed that the Qbo capsule material reduces CO2 emissions by around 3


    “While our Qbo capsule is still made from PP, it is now produced from 70% renewable raw materials, rather than virgin petroleum like traditional coffee capsules are often used,” explains Marius-Konstantin Wiche, Tchibo Capsules and Innovation Development Manager "This makes the entire Qbo range, contained in sustainably grown Qbo coffee, one of the most sustainable capsules on the mark.


    Renewable materials are supplied through a mass balance method, certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon (ISCC PLUS) syst.


    Renewable solutions are described as offering the same quality and characteristics as conventional solutions, meaning the new coffee capsules offer the same performance and product experien.


    “We need to make sure that the high quality and delicious taste of Qbo coffee is not compromised,” says Marius-Konstantin Wiche, “that’s why we focus on replacing the raw material of the capsules, rather than the PP itse.


    For Berry, the launch of the new capsule supports its recently announced commitment to achieve 30% recycled plastic use in its FMCG packaging by 2030, as the company envisions a long-term decoupling from virgin plastic and fossil fue.
