BASF has once again been recognized as one of the world's leading companies by the non-profit Center for Global Environmental Information (CDP, formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) for its initiatives in the fields of water, forest and climate protection
.
BASF received an "A-" rating in all three categories
.
Dr.
Christoph Jökel, Head of Corporate Sustainability at BASF, said: “We are proud to be recognized by CDP as a global leader again this year.
Receiving
this accolade confirms BASF’s commitment to sustainability and demonstrates BASF’s role in climate change.
Measures in the areas of conservation, water resources and forest management are deeply embedded in the corporate strategy
.
”
By 2030, BASF will introduce sustainable water management systems at all relevant production sites, including large integrated sites (Verbund) and areas with water stress
.
CDP assesses how companies can transparently report on their water management and reduce risks such as water scarcity
.
The assessment also examines the extent to which product development contributes to the customer's sustainable water management
.
This is the second time BASF has been assessed by CDP for forest protection
.
BASF understands the importance of forest protection for the environment and social well-being
.
As a player across the value chain, BASF is committed to ending deforestation within the supply chain
.
Since 2016, BASF has regularly provided information on the progress and cooperation of this value chain through the Palm Progress Report
.
From 2020, all palm (kernel) oils sourced by BASF will be certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)
.
At the same time, BASF is also committed to expanding the scope of sustainable procurement: by 2025, the chemical derivatives of palm (kernel) oil and vegetable ester oil will be included in the procurement
.
In addition, BASF has made further progress in building a transparent supply chain: it is able to trace almost 95% of its global palm oil footprint (totaling 441,107 tonnes) to the original plant (the mill)
.
Since 2004, BASF has been submitting climate protection-related data reports to CDP, thereby maintaining transparent communication with stakeholders on climate protection strategies and CO2 reduction measures
.
BASF has set climate protection goals of achieving net-zero global CO2 emissions by 2050 and a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2018 levels
.
At the heart of long-term emissions reductions is the use of new technologies to replace fossil fuels such as natural gas with renewable energy
.
Most of these technologies are being developed by BASF itself, or jointly with partners, and are currently in the experimental phase
.
The widespread rollout of these technologies will not be fully realized until after 2030
.
Until then, in order to accelerate the reduction of CO2 emissions, BASF will continue to systematically and continuously improve the processes of existing production units
.
In addition, in 2021, BASF invested in a renewable energy production plant to supply its own electricity and signed a contract to supply renewable energy to the site
.
