On July 24, a BASF spokesman confirmed that BASF has declared force majeure at its toluene diisocyanate (TDI) plant in Geismar, Louisiana

TDI supply has been sufficient to meet demand in recent months due to reduced consumption of TDI and downstream polyurethanes due to the economic impact of the coronavirus outbreak

Demand has begun to recover from the lows seen in April and May as car factories resume production and demand for furniture and bedding begins to approach pre-crisis levels

TDI is primarily used to produce flexible polyurethane (PU) foam for upholstery, mattresses and car seats

Major US TDI producers include BASF and Covestro
