● The new site will help drive the transition to e-mobility in the North American market and strengthen BASF's market position as the world's leading cathode active material (CAM) supplier
● The new base initially plans to produce cathode active materials, and will later cover cathode material precursors, recycling and metal refining capacity
As part of its commitment to support North American producers in their transition to electric mobility, BASF has signed a land purchase agreement to prepare for the future construction of a cathode active material and recycling facility in Becancour, Quebec, Canada
.
Regional supply chains are critical to ensuring a reliable and resilient supply of battery materials
.
Combined with its existing production base, this investment aims to further strengthen BASF's production capacity for cathode active materials in North America
.
The new base will have enough space to increase the production capacity of cathode active materials to 100,000 tons per year in the future, and can integrate the production of cathode material precursors (PCAM)
.
The base will be closely linked to BASF's global metal procurement network, supplying basic metal intermediate refining for nickel and cobalt, and recycling of metals (including lithium) in battery materials
.
This potential future upstream investment integration opportunity will help BASF achieve an integrated closed-loop battery materials ecosystem in all key regional markets
.
Planning for this project is currently underway
.
After obtaining the necessary approvals, BASF expects to have the project operational in 2025
.

The new site is ideally located on the banks of the St.
Lawrence River between Montreal and Quebec City: the new site will provide favorable conditions for efficient logistics
.
At the same time, thanks to the local competitive hydropower generation, the carbon footprint of future products will be further reduced compared to the industry average
