At its integrated production site (Verbund) in Geismar, Louisiana, BASF's plans to increase its methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) capacity are on track
.
Over time, BASF aims to double its production capacity from 300,000 tonnes/year to about 600,000 tonnes/year

Over time, BASF aims to double its production capacity from 300,000 tonnes/year to about 600,000 tonnes/year
.
Ramkumar Dhruva, President of BASF's Monomers Division, said: "The North American MDI market and our customers remain a focus and we are seeking this investment to support their growth
.
"The Geismar plant is ideally suited for this investment due to the existing infrastructure, competitive raw materials and continued strong commercial support from state and local governments,
" added Stefan Doerr, head of BASF's monomer business in North America.
The first phase, the construction of a new MDI synthesis unit, was completed and commissioned
.
While immediate capacity additions are limited, new MDI production units set the stage for future growth through capacity additions from upstream units
.
In the second phase (currently under construction), BASF will expand several upstream units, and by doing so, will increase the total MDI production at the Geismar complex by about a third
.
The second phase is expected to start in the second half of 2021
.
A potential final phase is targeted for completion by mid-century
.
It is expected that the MDI capacity will reach about 600,000 tons/year
