Two 33-kilovolt submarine cables connecting Sitakunda upazila to Sandwip in Chittagong have begun trial operation, and people living on Sandwip Island in Chittagong will receive electricity
from the national grid for the first time this Thursday, according to the Bangladesh Electricity Development Board (BPDB).

BPDB Director (Public Relations Department) Saiful Islam Chowdhury said the two submarine cables in the Bay of Bengal are the first domestic submarine cable projects in Bangladesh and cost about Tk 1.
    45 billion
    .

The government approved the project on 10 September 2014 as part of
an initiative to improve the electricity distribution system in the Chittagong area.
The total planned total cost of the power distribution system is Tk
    10.
    99 billion.

In September 2017, BPDB cooperated with the Chinese enterprise Zhongtian Technology to implement the project
    .
    The company began construction
    in December last year.

Saiful said it expects power supply to transmit up to 3MW of power
    to Sandwip from next week.

Earlier, the BPDB had said it would send 10MW of electricity
per day to 10,000 islanders from December.
Up to 50MW of electricity will be transmitted via submarine cables, each capable of transmitting 30MW, and will operate for 50 years
    .

According to the 2011 census of Bangladesh, there were 278,605 people
    on the island.

Saiful said the operation of the submarine cable will help islanders improve their living conditions and access to electricity from the national grid, believing that "the overall economy is better because of the electricity supply.
