Avient today announced a new line of nylon-based Complēt™ long-fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites with enhanced moisture resistance and smooth surface aesthetics
.
Nylon 6 and 66 in these formulations have delayed moisture absorption, which prolongs the effectiveness of their structural properties in wet environments
.
The new materials also target the inconsistent surface appearance of long-fiber polyamides, which have affected perceptions of quality in the past
.
Long glass fiber reinforced grades of Complēt Moisture Resistant Nylon have a smooth surface with few visible fibers, making them suitable for a wide range of consumer applications
.
Complēt moisture resistant nylon 6 and 66 grades are available worldwide in a variety of fiber loading levels (weight percent) using long glass fibers, long carbon fibers or a hybrid combination
.
This allows these materials to maintain structural properties between standard and specialty nylons when exposed to moisture
.
As a result, these materials are ideal for metal replacement and lightweighting in automotive and powersports applications that encounter varying climates or intermittent exposure to water
.
“When manufacturers look to quell performance issues by limiting the hygroscopicity of nylon 6 or 66, the only option is lower hygroscopic, higher-cost specialty nylons,” said Eric Wollan, general manager of Avient Long Fiber Technologies.
The new series of moisture-resistant nylon filaments have been modified to absorb moisture more slowly
.
This greatly extends the effectiveness of the part’s structural capabilities in wet environments or short-term water immersion, but at a more economical price
.
”
Additionally, Complēt nylon grades offer lower shrinkage for applications requiring high dimensional stability
.
In fact, they can be used as a material solution to the warpage caused by uneven cooling
.
