The Americas-I consortium has amended the application for a new cable landing permit to allow the Americas-I submarine cable system to continue operating for 25 years
.
In September 1994, the submarine optical cable telecommunications cable system Americas-I North was put into operation
.
The system has a length of 2012 km and is owned and operated
by a consortium of then AT&T, CANTV, CNT, Emmatel, Sprint, Tata Communications, Telxius, Verizon.
Atlantic Telecom Operating Corporation (ATOC) has acquired Sprint Communications Company's interest in the Ameleica-1 system, increasing ATOC's stake in the cable to 8.
25 percent; subsequently, Sprint has exited the system
entirely.
The cable system has landing sites in the United States, however, after the current license expired on September 1, 2019, a new cable landing permit application was submitted to allow the Americas I Cable System to continue operating for another 25 years
