Austria-based ALPLA Group and the Vöslauer Mineralwasser mineral water brand have launched recyclable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles
.
The 1-liter bottle was the first of its kind in Austria and is now on store shelves
.
Global plastic packaging producer and recycler ALPLA has partnered with Austrian market-leading mineral water brand Vöslauer to develop a recyclable PET bottle that reportedly reduces carbon emissions by around 30%
.
The recyclable PET bottle weighs 55 g/2 oz, which is nearly 90% lighter than the recyclable glass bottle
.
The light weight offers carbon footprint reduction benefits in production, transport and container storage
.
The bottle bears the Austrian Ecolabel and is made from a fully recyclable PET monomer material with a recycling rate of approximately 30%
.
"People want sustainable consumption
.
Although recyclable PET is the best packaging solution, until now there was no such product on the Austrian market" Rainer Widmar, Managing Director, Central and Eastern Europe at Alpra said in a prepared statement
.
"The recyclable PET bottle developed with Vöslauer demonstrates how demand, responsibility, a desire for innovation and technical expertise can reduce the carbon footprint
.
"
Recyclable PET bottles enable Vöslauer to save around 441 tonnes of material and 463 tonnes of CO2 per year
.
The bottles need to withstand at least 12 use cycles and are expected to last three to four years
.
The bottle was presented to the world on April 20 in the presence of Austrian Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler and Greenpeace Managing Director for Central and Eastern Europe Alexander Egit
.
According to Vöslauer Managing Directors Birgit Aichinger and Herbert Schlossnikl, “Most Austrians would like to see recyclable containers on supermarket shelves.
PET is an environmentally friendly new product in our product range
.
As the market leader in the deposit sector, We are the first company in Austria to create a lightweight and practical alternative
.
"
The recyclable PET bottle project enhances Vöslauer's ongoing sustainability efforts, which include being the first Austrian mineral water brand to offer a 500ml recyclable glass bottle
.
In addition, all of the company's single-use PET bottles are made entirely from recycled PET (rPET)
.
Vöslauer has remained carbon neutral since the beginning of 2020
