A few days ago, Italy's national electricity Enel announced that it has acquired a 73.
4% controlling stake
in Brazil's São Paulo Metropolitan Electricity Company (Eletropaulo).
Alitalia acquires a 73.
4% stake in Brazil's largest distributor
The offer was accepted
by Eletropaulo shareholders following the official auction.
Enel will acquire 122.
7 million shares
for approximately R$5.
55 billion at a price of R$45.
22 per share.
In addition to acquiring a controlling stake, Enel committed to injecting R$1.
5 billion into Eletropaulo
.
To gain a controlling stake in Eletropaulo, Enel entered into a fierce bidding war
with Neoenergia SA, a subsidiary of Spain's Iberdrola SA.
While Brazil's Energisa SA was the first player to make a takeover proposal, it quickly dropped out of
the competition.
Local media said that through the acquisition, Enel will replace CPFL Energias Renovaveis, which has a controlling body of China's State Grid, as the largest electricity distributor
in Brazil.
