Air Liquide and BASF plan to develop the world's largest cross-border "Carbon Capture and Storage" (CCS) value chain to significantly reduce carbon emissions from the Antwerp port cluster
.
The joint project, named "Kairos@C", was selected out of 300 applications to become one of seven large-scale projects supported by the European Commission's Innovation Fund
.
Kairos@C will be jointly developed by Air Liquide and BASF at their Antwerp site
.
The reduction of 14.
2 million tonnes of CO2 emissions in the first ten years of project operation will make a significant contribution to the EU's 2050 carbon neutrality
.
In addition to capturing, liquefying, transporting and storing carbon dioxide in large quantities in the North Sea, the project includes several innovative technologies
.
In particular, Air Liquide will use its proprietary CryocapTM technology to capture carbon dioxide from production units, while BASF will use its Sorbead® solution to dehydrate the carbon dioxide
.
The project is expected to start operations in 2025
.
Kairos@C paves the way for the next phase of carbon reduction in the Port of Antwerp
.
The project will link shared CO2 transport and export infrastructure, including the first CO2 liquefaction and export facility
.
The terminal equipped with the equipment will be built within the framework of the "Antwerp@C" consortium, which aims to halve the carbon emissions of the port of Antwerp by 2030.
Air Liquide and BASF are founding companies of the consortium
.
Air Liquide Chairman and CEO Bo Tian said: "Air Liquide is committed to making a positive contribution to a low-carbon society, in line with the company's 2050 sustainability goal of achieving carbon neutrality
.
The energy transition requires comprehensive projects.
, as well as the joint efforts of the government and the private sector
.
We are delighted that Kairos@C has been selected as the 'Innovation Fund' to support the project to contribute to the EU climate goals, mainly thanks to several innovative technologies
from Air Liquide.
Air Liquide The strategic cooperation between the Group and BASF in the Port of Antwerp has been going on for more than 50 years, and this breakthrough technology opens a new chapter in the partnership between the two parties to create a sustainable industry
.
"
Dr.
Brummeller, Chairman of the Executive Board of BASF Europe, said: “BASF aims to reduce the company’s CO2 emissions by 25% by 2030 compared to 2018 levels and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
To achieve these ambitious reduction targets, we must Maximize the use of existing technologies
.
Especially at BASF's integrated site in Antwerp, which is located in the port of Antwerp and adjacent to the sea, 'carbon capture' can be produced in a relatively short period of time with an industrial equivalent reduction in the production process of CO2 emissions
.
Kairo@C is therefore another major project for us to achieve climate neutrality
.
”
The European Innovation Fund is one of the world's largest programs to promote innovative low-carbon technologies and decarbonize European industry
.
Obtaining support from this fund is an important milestone in making the final investment decision and beginning the implementation of this project
