South Africa's telecommunications service provider MTN Group has suspended investment in the deployment of Iran's fibre optic network, which is being implemented
by Iranian Net.
In May 2017, MTN said it would acquire a 49% stake in Iranian Net through its local MTN Irancell, which it plans to inject $350 million into the company to fund fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) infrastructure expansion
in eight Iranian cities.
But according to Mehr News, the South African company failed to put the expected money into the fiber optic network project
.
The report said that due to the increasing pressure from international sanctions, the Iranian government is unable to meet its financing needs
.
In addition, trade sanctions have also caused MTN to experience some difficulties
in making profits through Irancell.
