The Asian Development Bank and Bangladesh on Thursday signed a $500 million loan agreement to develop a state-of-the-art 800-megawatt power plant in Bangladesh's Khulna region, as well as related gas and transmission facilities
.
ADB builds Bangladesh's first zero-liquid power plant with $500 million
Muhammad Alkama Siddiqui, additional secretary of Bangladesh's Department of Economic Relations, and Manmohan Parkash, director of the Asian Development Bank in Bangladesh, signed the loan agreement
at a ceremony in Dhaka.
"This large-scale project builds on ADB's strong and ongoing support in Bangladesh's power sector, which will use the latest proven combined cycle technology to convert natural gas into electricity to provide maximum efficiency
.
" Xinhua quoted Parkash as saying
.
ADB is placing greater emphasis on introducing new and high-impact technologies to benefit
its member countries.
It will be a state-of-the-art power plant with the latest zero liquid discharge technology, making it the first of its kind in Bangladesh
.
Parkash said the project will provide additional power to about 300,000 consumers, creating new jobs and spurring business expansion
.
This environmentally friendly project will significantly improve energy security and the availability of
efficient and clean energy.
To supply gas to the Rupsha power plant, the project will build 12 kilometers of natural gas distribution pipelines and finance the construction of 230 kV switching stations and 29 kilometers of high-capacity transmission lines to transfer power generation to the national grid
.
According to the Asian Development Bank statement, the power plant project will also help strengthen the institutions of the implementing agency, the Northwest Power Generation Company
, by implementing a modern enterprise resource planning system and providing training for its implementation and operation.
