Apple's Titan project to develop an electric car is accelerating, with the goal of building a fully self-driving car without a steering wheel by 2025
.
That's according to a senior insider at the company who told Bloomberg's Mark Gurman
.
According to Bloomberg, Apple's program chief Kevin Lynch decided to go all-in on autonomy rather than roll out traditional electric vehicles first and then add self-driving capabilities
.
Although the 2025 delivery target appears a bit difficult, the company is said to have done most of the "core work" on the dedicated processors it plans to use to drive cars
.
Apple's Silicon Valley engineers may embrace the "move fast and disrupt the status quo" philosophy, but they are still faced with the reality that autonomous driving appears to be becoming a reality as the challenges of developing such systems become clearer to proponents display
.
Tesla boss Elon Musk acknowledged in response to a question about the continued delay in his company's full self-driving technology: "Autonomous driving is a difficult problem because it needs to solve a large part of real-world artificial intelligence
.
I didn't expect it to be this difficult
.
"
With that in mind, it remains to be seen whether the Apple team can address these issues in such a short period of time
.
The company is said to be leaning towards a "lounge-like" configuration with a central display and no driver controls
.
It will be interesting to see what kind of progress Apple can make, but after seeing the efforts of many other companies being deterred by real-world difficulties, the 2025 debut target sounds slightly more optimistic
.
Meanwhile, Foxconn, Apple's supplier of most of its electronic hardware, is actively looking for a U.
S.
site to build electric vehicles under contract because Foxconn is currently making phones for other companies
