    Recently, ABB said it is planning to install a microgrid with battery storage on the IIT campus in Roorkee as part of
    a smart campus development project.
    This is part of a larger research and development collaboration outlined in a memorandum of
    understanding signed between ABB and IITR in July 2018.

    The technical cooperation agreement also includes the creation of a smart grid resource center, joint R&D facilities and doctoral student support
    .
    ABB Microgrid is part of an expanded R&D collaboration between ABB and IITR to create a research platform
    for all aspects of smart city technology deployment.

    In addition to microgrids, smart campus development will include technical solutions
    such as smart metering, SCADA, ring network host (RMU) and wireless broadband communication platform backbone.
    It aims to create an operational smart grid network that integrates all energy sources, including diesel generation and renewable energy
    .

    "As green energy becomes preferred, grid edge technologies such as microgrids are becoming viable options for harnessing renewable energy to build smart, inclusive and sustainable cities, while also providing reliable power
    for communities, campuses or remote or off-grid areas," said the President of ABB Power Grids India.

    Energy metering solutions will be used in energy accounting, billing and collection processes

    The metering solution will measure the energy provided by the grid and diesel generators in separate registers to apply differential tariffs, which will sensitize
    campus residents and user groups to the cost impact of diesel consumption.
